UV Protection for Kids and How to Sell It

$
0
0

For many parents, convincing their children to wear sunglasses is as difficult as getting them to wear sunscreen. According to The Vision Council, only 7.4 percent of American adults report their child “always” wears sunglasses and 13.4 percent report they use “nothing” to protect their child’s eyes from the sun’s UV rays. Kids generally receive three times the annual sun exposure of adults. Sunglasses are effective because they offer both UVA and UVB protection. In March, ZEISS even introduced UV Protect on all its lenses. Polycarbonate and Trivex lenses have a UV filter and are lightweight and impact resistant for children. Talk to your younger patients about sunwear. They’ll thank you in the long run.

Smart Ways to Sell UV-blocking Lenses to Kids

Dr. Aaron Lech CLEARVUE EYE CARE, ROSEVILLE, CA

UV-blocking materials are readily available and we need to supply them. We should not have to convince a patient to buy them. We require UV on every pair of glasses that a patient purchases from us. It’s about giving them what they need and not compromising just to sell a pair of glasses.

Danielle Crull A CHILD’S EYE, MECHANICSBURG, PA

I usually say to parents that while clear lenses have UV protection, if their child is sensitive to visible light, sunglass lenses offer better protection. Transition lenses are an option but don’t work for every child, especially those aged six and under. I carry a selection of inexpensive Rx-adaptable sunglasses for children and I talk to them about what a pair of sunglasses offers versus putting a sunglass lens in a dress frame. Bollé has a nice selection of glasses in the 8-14 age range. I love Julbo’s quality, and they have sizes for infants and toddlers right up to youth.

Dr. Nathan Bonilla-Warford BRIGHT EYES KIDS, TAMPA, FL

As a doctor who lives in a high UV region, I feel it is my duty to discuss sun protection with every patient regardless of their age. I explain to kids that sunglasses are a smart way to protect their eyes and they should use them when they go outside and any time they use sunblock.

Down to the Wire (ABOVE)

Wires was established in 2017 by Yair Neuman, a London-based designer, under the creative direction of model/actress Lily Cole. “Wires combines technologies inspired by ancient African wire artistry and 3D printing,” says Yair. The 2018 collection is modular with one foundational wire frame that fits all seven lens rim designs. “The lenses and rims can be easily switched so you can change the look of your glasses without needing to buy a whole new pair,” says Cole. Unisex with a patented invisible folding mechanism and lightweight polished stainless steel frames, the 2018 collection includes seven designs in different colors and finishes. The 180° White Matte Silver on her and 180° White Brass on him. Featuring Carl Zeiss polycarbonate lenses, the collection is Rx’able.

Multifocal Contact Lenses and Smart Ways to Sell Them

$

Multifocal contact lenses can be a good choice for presbyopes, come in both soft and rigid gas permeable lens materials, and can be used for daily or extended wear. Alcon recently launched a new multifocal fitting process and doubled the number of multifocal contact lens training sessions it holds at their Experience Center. “By 2020, there will be roughly 1,800 presbyopes for each optometrist, yet only 13 percent of eyecare professionals are currently fitting multifocal contact lenses as a solution,” says Dr. Rick Weisbarth, Vice President of Professional Affairs of Alcon US Vision Care. To support ECPs, Alcon is taking training directly to the practitioners by increasing its Multifocal Fit Training Road Shows.

Smart Ways to Sell Multifocal Contact Lenses

Dr. Gina Wesley COMPLETE EYE CARE OF MEDINA, MEDINA, MN

The technology in multifocal contact lenses has never been better. I tell my patients to think of them as another tool in the arsenal of options to enhance their daily visual performance. My goal is to have them free from reaching for reading glasses 75 percent of the time. I have many patients who do even better than this, but I set specific goals for each patient based on what they want to achieve. Visual success is measured by how well both eyes see when working together. Unlike traditional distance-only contact lenses, isolating one eye at a time while wearing multifocal CL’s may show reductions in vision. I suggest my patients pay attention to how well they can perform their usual activities while both eyes are open. When the patient returns for a check-up, they give me feedback about how the lenses are working. I can then make adjustments to optimize vision, if necessary. Many patients are ready to finalize their prescription at this appointment.

Dr. Stephanie Woo HAVASU EYE CENTER, LAKE HAVASU, AZ

I ask my patients in the chair, “Would you like to be able to see at distance and up close with your contacts?” Then I tell them there are special contact lenses that can help them accomplish more functional vision. Many of our patients wear multifocals part-time for weekends, sports, boating and special occasions but not all the time. Part-time wearers are great candidates for daily multifocal lenses. Many of these patients love the lenses so much, they keep coming back to buy more. Sticker shock can be an issue for many patients, so breaking down the costs and the savings can really be an eye opener. I’m also sure to tell them that certain rebates only apply at a practitioner’s office and not at a big box retailer, so they will only get the rebate if they purchase them from us.

$700 Million Dollars

Think About Your Eyes generated 3.4 million eye exams in 2017, data shows. The success was measured using a statistical analysis of all factors contributing to the creation of eye exams, including population growth, marketing efforts, vision care insurance coverage, and health of the economy. The increase in exams and shortening of the exam cycle resulted in $752 million in additional industry revenue. This represents exam fees and add-on purchases, like frames, contact lenses and other accessories. thinkaboutyoureyes.com
